We love the western. Chalk River is one, and it is the world this studio was built around: the hat, the six-shooter, the long street at noon.
The Longwake is the same frontier, one valley over. Revival is drawn from the North American folklore that grew up alongside the western, and the first thing worth knowing about it is that it is not one tradition.
It is a collision.
🌊 What actually happened
Old-world superstitions crossed the Atlantic in the heads of people who mostly could not read. They met a continent nothing in them described. They met each other. They met traditions that were already here.
What came out is a hybrid that exists nowhere else. Scottish and Irish fairy belief became Appalachian haints. German hex signs were painted on barns standing beside them. French lumberjacks made a deal with the devil to fly a canoe home for New Year.
That collision is not our backdrop. It is our setting.
🕯️ One spirit, two realms, two behaviours
Here is the moment the whole thing clicked for us.
The feu follet is a will-o'-the-wisp, and the French brought it to Québec. Carried down the Mississippi by the same people, it arrives in Louisiana as the fifollet, and it has turned malicious on the way south. In the north it is a strange light. In the bayou it lures your boat deeper into the water until the boat flips.
Same spirit. Same settlers. Different river, different creature.
That is one card, two realms, different behaviour. A mechanic handed to us by history rather than invented at a whiteboard.
💧 And then three peoples agreed without ever meeting
The feu follet lures boats over dark water. French.
La Llorona weeps at the river for the children she drowned. Spanish.
The utopiec simply is the drowned, living on in the element that killed him, dragging down anything that stands too near still water. Polish.
Three unrelated peoples crossed an ocean and independently arrived at the same idea: the water keeps what it takes.
We did not invent that. It is what actually happened, and you can put all three on a board as one mechanic seen three ways.
☀️ The dangerous hour is the bright one
Almost every horror story is night, cold, or deep woods. It becomes a habit, and habits get boring.
Południca, Lady Midday, is a Polish demon of a young woman who died before her wedding. She comes at noon, in the open field, in full sun: the hour when nobody is afraid, in the one place with nowhere to hide.
We have deliberately kept her that way. The Longwake is not uniformly dark, because the folklore it comes from is not.
🪶 The man who went into the woods
The gunslinger is one of the great figures, and Chalk River has him. The Longwake stands beside him with another, and almost nobody is using this one.
The coureur des bois, the runner of the woods, was a French-Canadian fur trader who went into the interior without a licence: outside colonial law, wintering with Native peoples, learning the languages and the routes, and coming back changed. The respectable licensed version came later and was called a voyageur. The coureur is the one who went first and answered to nobody.
Every other strand in the Longwake is a place or a tradition. The coureur is a person who moves between them. He is the collision walking around: European, living by what Native peoples taught him, belonging to neither and trusted by neither, and the only man who knows what is out past the last farm.
🏞️ And one river ties it together
The Ottawa Valley is where the Irish and the Scots met the French in the lumber shanties. It is where the flying canoe legend actually comes from. It is also where Wilno, Ontario sits, Canada's oldest Polish settlement, founded by Kashubs in the 1850s.
Polish drowners, French flying canoes and Irish shanty ghosts, in one watershed. That is not a setting anyone would dare invent. It is simply what is there.
It is also the same valley as Chalk River, which is a Vendetta project already. We did not plan that. We are certainly going to use it.
🃏 Why this is a card game and not a novel
Because a bargain with terms is a card.
The chasse-galerie is a deal with conditions: do not blaspheme, do not touch a church steeple, be back before six. Break a term and the price falls due. That is not flavour text bolted onto a mechanic. That is a mechanic that already existed for two hundred years before we got to it.
🚪 Come and see it
